A sweet event hosted by community beekeeper, Ian!

Save the Date: April 8th is the ‘Hives for Humanity Benefit Show’, a community-powered fundraiser for people and pollinators in the Downtown Eastside.

DTES, Vancouver, BC – The first annual “Hives for Humanity Benefit Show” presents a convergence of local music and community-powered initiatives. This year’s Benefit Show takes place on April 8th at the Rickshaw Theatre (254 E. Hastings St.) and features a mixed line-up of local bands and emerging artists including: First 2 Go (8:15pm), Double Shotzz (9pm), Ripple Illusion (10pm), Old Soul Rebel (11pm), and Slow Learners (midnight). Doors open at 8pm, tickets are $10 and the organizers will donate all funds to Hives for Humanity.

The event is being organized by DTES resident and H4H community beekeeper, Ian Smyth. A music-lover and musician, Ian decided to organize this event in support of Hives for Humanity as a way to raise awareness and extend the ‘culture of the hive’ through music. Ian has seen first-hand the transformative power of therapeutic beekeeping – his quote “The bees have given me hope, where before there was none.” was featured in H4H’s 2014 Annual Report, and his story is also featured in this year’s 2015 Annual Report.

Hives for Humanity believes in the power of saying “yes”. This simple word is the reason why we were able to place a beehive in the heart of the DTES, back in 2012. Since then, our programming has expanded to include several DTES community apiaries, and a growing number of DTES community beekeepers, gardeners and pollinator-enthusiasts. So, when Ian approached Hives for Humanity with an idea to organize this benefit show, and to see if he had our support, we were happy to say “yes”. It is our hope that you will join us in supporting local music, community-led initiatives, and community in Vancouver’s DTES.
